About one-in-six households in Canada’s provinces have had difficulties affording food in recent years, according to a new report.The report was released Tuesday

“The prevalence of household food insecurity in Canada matters because food insecurity is such a potent social determinant of health,” said researchers. “Food-insecure people are much more likely than others to suffer from chronic physical and mental health problems and infectious and noncommunicable diseases.”

The percentage varies between the individual provinces. At 16.1 per cent, Ontario was higher than Quebec and lower than Alberta .
