A \u0022Strong Mayors\u0022 bill would create powers to stick handle provincial priorities through its two largest municipalities, MPPs heard Tuesday.
Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark said the mayors of Toronto and Ottawa would be able to hire and fire top city bureaucrats, create new departments and committees, make key appointments, present budgets and veto bylaws that do not fall in line with the provincial government’s agenda.From our newsroom to your inbox at noon, the latest headlines, stories, opinion and photos from the Toronto Sun.
The new powers would allow the mayors to support provincially designated priority items but also their own visions for the communities, he said. “I know some are going to argue that this limits the role of city councillors,” Clark said. “I want to stress to you … that there is still a lot of room to debate the budget on the council floor, something that I think we all feel is a very positive step.”tap here to see other videos from our teamToronto Mayor John Tory has supported the bill, saying it will help move along a shared agenda with the province to create more housing.
