As Peru invites Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for an extended visit ahead of a major multinational summit next fall, its new ambassador in Ottawa is hoping that Canada will increase its engagement in Latin America. “Canada is a medium-power country. How do you show that you really are a medium power? You show your power with your influence and where you can really grow is with Latin America,” Peruvian Ambassador Manuel Gerardo Talavera Espinar told during a Feb.

Talavera said that 2024 is an important year for the Ottawa-Lima relationship, with the celebration of 80 years of diplomatic relations, and 15 years since the Canada-Peru free trade pact came into force. While trumpeting the trading relationship between the two countries, the Peruvian ambassador said more work needs to be done to ensure tourism rebounds to pre-COVID levels.
