Most Little Free Libraries are small constructions of wood and glass, perfect for a Girl Scout project to brighten up a neighborhood. But the one going up at Heights Blvd. and 11th St. in The Heights, set to be installed by the end of April, will be 100 pounds of steel with acrylic glass and reinforced bars. The books inside are pulled from the list of challenged titles in Texas schools. Welcome to the Little Banned Library.
"The Breakaways," a children's graphic novel about a group of 8th graders who play soccer together and features a transgender character, was banned from Spring Branch ISD elementary school libraries this week after the district said a committee reviewed the material and found that it was “not age appropriate." Cathy G. Johnson, author of the book, said that the target age range for readers is 8 to 14.
A common complaint from parents challenging books with LGBT themes is the accusation that they are pornography, particularly Alison Bechdel’s “Fun Home,” a graphic novel of growing up with a closeted gay father. Bechdel’s book contains light nudity and a depiction of a sexual encounter. The level of sexual content in the book is similar to that of the 1968 and 1996 film versions of “Romeo and Juliet,” which are still recommended by numerous teacher resource websites.
