A new driving licence law has come into force today .Healthcare professionals that aren't doctors are now able to complete medical questionnaires from the DVLA, which will speed up the process for thousands of applications, reports TheUnder the new amendment to the Road Traffic Act 1988, specialist nurses and opticians, amongst other healthcare professionals can complete the medical questionnaire.

The Government organisation is hoping to improve the medical licensing process and also tackle the backlog that has built up. It will also relieve the burden being placed on doctors. All drivers have to meet the medical standards for fitness to drive by law, and before the amendment came into place, only a doctor could complete the DVLA medical form.

However now, even though the DVLA will continue to send questionnaires to GMC doctors and consultants, other healthcare staff involved in the patients care can complete it for them. It will be up to individual GP practices and hospital teams as to which healthcare professional in practice is best placed to complete the questionnaire, but medical professionals from the following Councils will be allowed:
