in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer and this year New Jersey has banned smoking and vaping on nearly every public beach under tougher new restrictions. Individual beaches must establish a means to monitor capacity and enforce six feet social distancing apart from family groups, caretakers and couples.

"We gotta continue to comply now at the beach," Murphy said during his briefing."And while we are not specifically ordering it, we highly recommend that you wear a face covering, particularly when social distancing is difficult to maintain such as waiting in line for a slice of boardwalk pizza." New Jersey is second only to New York in confirmed coronavirus cases and reported deaths in the U.S. with 142,704 and 9,946, respectively, though new cases and hospilizations have overall steadily ticked downwardCounties and cities in Florida and California have struggled in how best to reopen beaches amid the pandemic.
