A new indoor climbing gym called Rock Room is set to open in Thunder Bay before the end of the year, catering to a diverse community of climbers.
Climbing enthusiasts in Thunder Bay will soon have a new indoor facility to enjoy the sport thanks to city resident Mike Hyer. Hyer is planning to establish a community climbing gym called Rock Room before the end of the year. The central goals of the business are inclusion and community development, with safety as a top priority. Hyer said the facility will have three components to ensure safety.
The Boulder Bear Climbing Centre on the CLE grounds closed last year, leaving a gap in the local climbing scene. Hyer, an avid climber himself, is excited to have a gym to climb in again. He has been overwhelmed by the support from climbers across the country and is confident they can build a facility that caters to this diverse group. He expects to announce the location for the new business soon. Since 2022, Hyer has hosted a podcast called Up North Rocks which aims to strengthen links among climbers from the Manitoba border to Sudbury. He believes climbing has evolved from a niche activity to a widely embraced, family-friendly sport, even making its way to the Olympics.
