A new block of flats is set to start the major redevelopment of a city street. A plan to turn vacant land on the north side of Belconnen Road, Bestwood, into 17 apartments for Nottingham City Council’s Assisted Living programme, will be recommended for approval at the city council's July 20 planning committee.
Two western and eastern blocks, which would be three-storeys and two-storeys respectively, could be built on the land which was previously used for 28 garages. One flat in each block would be for the use of staff and communal purposes; the other 15 flats would be for residents who meet the requirements of the Assisted Living programme.
Plans have recently been put forward at the other end of Belconnen Road for a new Lidl to open on the former Chronos Richardson plastics site. A separate application has also been tabled for 62 new homes on the same plot.Neighbours have previously said they hoped the plans would stop their neighbourhood 'becoming a no-go area'. Developers have said the accommodation will "provide self-contained one-bed roomed apartments for a vulnerable section of the community", if approved.
The application was called to the council's planning committee because of Section 106 viability considerations. The local authority concluded the proposed development would be expected to provide £163.999.85 towards affordable housing and £26,027.17 to open space provision. In a report on the decision, a planning officer for Nottingham City Council, said concerns were initially raised about the relationship of the proposed buildings and the retaining structure which is proposed to run along the northern boundary of the site, but this has been revisited by the applicant.
