Jewish groups are wondering how Harden (Ottawa Centre) is still being allowed to remain in the NDP caucus at Queen’s Park.
An Ottawa New Democratic MPP has been forced to apologize for making antisemitic comments.
“I spoke in a way that perpetrated an antisemitic stereotype towards Jewish neighbours,” he said in a written apology.Under pressure from the party, he changed his tune Sunday. “If I were to name ... the single greatest threat, the single greatest origin of violence in the Middle East, it is unquestionably the state of Israel and the way in which they feel absolutely no shame in defying international law, doing whatever they want,” the New Democrat said last year.“Mr. Harden’s comments were completely unacceptable and hurtful to the Jewish community,” said Tabuns.
“In a time when anti-Jewish hate is on the rise, it’s deeply disappointing and hurtful that an elected official would share such rhetoric so casually,” the groups said in a joint statement signed by Andrea Freedman, president and CEO of Jewish Federation of Ottawa and David Cooper, a vice president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs.
