While NDP MP Charlie Angus’ proposed legislation may have succeeded in fuelling a debate on whether the promotion of fossil fuels should go up in smoke in the way of cigarette advertising, its incendiary language has tempers flaring amongst the New Democrats' Prairie counterparts and some Indigenous communities who see resource development projects as a path to “true economic reconciliation.” Angus’ private member's bill, C-372, tabled in the House of Commons on Feb.
” “Overwhelmingly, the profits from resource extraction don't go to Indigenous Peoples, they go to foreign—not Canadian—corporations,” May said, adding that while she would “always defer to Indigenous people” on issues of sovereignty over their own territories, that sovereignty has been consistently ignored by the fossil fuel industry.
