The St. Anthony big has security and now can focus on being an integral part of the team's future.
The Spurs have liked what they have seen in former St. Anthony standout Charles Bassey, enough so to give the backup center a new, four-year deal.CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The happiest man in the Spurs’ traveling party leaned back in his chair on the front row at the Spectrum Center on Wednesday morning, a pair of ice packs strapped to his left knee and a cheek-to-cheek grin perma-plastered across his face.
Considering the 22-year-old’s well-chronicled journey from his birthplace in Lagos, Nigeria to the Spurs’ payroll, even those adjectives seem insufficient. The feeling of satisfaction Bassey experienced in that moment was not solely measured in dollars and cents. Bassey’s basketball life had already come full circle when he signed his original two-way deal in October. He played two high school seasons at St. Anthony before eligibility and recruiting questions sent him packing for a prep school in Louisville, Ky.
“My journey has been up and down, due to circumstances,” Bassey said. “Injuries, then getting waived, then getting the two-way with the Spurs and them giving me a chance.”
