Chip Roy, R-Texas, pointed out that this is the first time two Black Americans have been nominated for speaker."However … we do not seek to judge people by the color of their skin, but rather the content of their character," Roy said after the applause quieted."Byron Donalds is a good man, raised by a single mom, who moved past adversity, became a Christian man at the age of 21 and has devoted his life to advancing the cause for his family and for this country.
Donalds voted for McCarthy on the first two ballots Tuesday but switched his vote to Rep.-elect Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on the third ballot, insisting that McCarthy failed to win the necessary support to move forward. Roy voted for Donalds on the first ballot Tuesday before voting twice for Jordan. Arguing that Americans are searching for new leadership, Roy insisted that"I believe that face, vision and leadership is Byron Donalds."Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin moved to nominate Kevin McCarthy for a fourth time, despite talks that Republicans might try to adjourn the House for more negotiations because the Republican leader still didn't have enough votes to secure the speakership."Sure, it looks messy.
