Cancer patients north of the Malahat on Vancouver Island must currently travel to Victoria for many treatments, including radiation therapy.
The new cancer centre, to be located at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, was announced by B.C. Premier David Eby and Health Minister Adrian Dix in Nanaimo on Friday. It will be the second cancer centre on Vancouver Island after Victoria.
Dix said Nanaimo is a rapidly growing community, “so it’s important that we continue to meet the demand for health-care services as it evolves.” Dix, in announcing last week that 4,800 breast and prostate cancer patients over two years will receive their radiation therapy in Bellingham, Washington, as a way to reduce wait lists here, acknowledged the province needs at least 16 new linear accelerators. There are 31 in the province now.
