New Calgary day home regulations set to take effect in the new year yyc
Starting Jan. 1, a new Calgary bylaw will require home-based daycares to apply for business licences, have first-aid and CPR training, and pass police background checks. The Alberta government has similar requirements for larger child-care centres, but smaller, home-based services are unregulated. The mothers-turned-child-care advocates started Mackenzy’s Legacy, an advocacy organization named after Woolfsmith’s daughter, who died at 22 months old from injuries she sustained at an unlicensed day home in 2012. Stewart’s son was assaulted at a day home three years ago when he was just 18 months old.Article content
“We are so grateful and so happy that something is finally being done, that these measures are being put into place to increase safety,” said Woolfsmith.
