The government introduced a motion Wednesday calling for the carbon tax to be abolished, while provincial Liberal leader Susan Holt says the planned increase should be paused.
The New Brunswick government has tabled a motion calling for the federal carbon pricing system to be abolished. They’re hoping to see support from opposition parties, but the provincial Liberals are taking a different position on the issue. Silas Brown reports.
The price on carbon set to rise by about three cents to around 17 cents per litre of gasoline on April 1. The system also include quarterly rebates to households. An Ontario city smashed its new housing targets by 250%. But are prices going down? But Holt said her position is based on the provincial government’s failure to act to address cost of living in the province.
An analysis from the Parliamentary Budget Officer, an independent budget watchdog, found that the majority of people in six out of seven province under the federal system get back more than they pay.But Holt says that the rebates don’t do much for people living paycheque-to-paycheque since they come “after the fact.” Like Holland, she added that people in her riding of Bathurst East-Nipisiguit- St. Idisore don’t have access to alternatives to emitting forms of transportation.
