The report, Excellence in Forest Management – Understanding our System, aims to take a deeper dive into the seven pillars of the province's forest management system: inventory, forest development, zoning, planning, operations, monitoring and protection. The 2023 theme focuses on topics of conservation, climate change, diversified forest utilization, the forest industry's dynamics and the burgeoning non-timber-related economic advantages, including maple sugaring and agri-food production.

The province is also implementing a multifaceted approach, which includes the creation of conservation programs, the establishment of protected areas and the cultivation of collaborative relationships with indigenous First Nations communities. “We are committed to increasing transparency and I am honoured to be the first minister in almost a decade to release a report on the state of our forests,” said Natural Resources and Energy Development Minister Mike Holland. “We are recognized leaders in our country in terms of forest management, from being the very first to use geographic information system technology, to our positive track record on forest fire prevention, and most recently, our historic doubling of protected lands and water.
