A 2022 New Brunswick Public Health investigation found no evidence of a shared common illness among 48 people who had reported unknown brain symptoms

Patients are lining up behind a prominent Canadian neurologist calling for an independent commission to determine whether an unknown neurological illness is afflicting people in New Brunswick . However, neither the province nor the federal government will commit to such an arm’s-length probe, saying patient case files still need to be completed.

“I also agree that the investigation should be conducted by an independent commission completely separate from government, with the caveat that Dr. Marrero at the very least be initially consulted,” she wrote in a statement to The Globe and Mail. “It is accurate to say that we will not rest until this happens.”

Federal Health Minister Mark Holland said the provincial notification process must be completed before an analysis of the case files can be conducted. The allegations against Dr. Léger stem from the fact the province required Dr. Marrero to fill out a second, more detailed two-page list of questions for each patient, which the physician says for some includes collating 100 pages of test results and medical history.
