FREDERICTON, N.B. — A group of medical professionals in New Brunswick is calling on Premier Blaine Higgs to ban fracking in response to his recent comments on establishing shale gas production in the province.
In a letter dated May 9, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment of New Brunswick, with support from the Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment and NB Lung Association, called for a meeting with the premier and asked the Progressive Conservative government to legislate a ban.The group cited findings from New Brunswick's chief medical health officer, the N.B.
"In light of this evidence, we called upon your government to maintain the moratorium on hydraulic fracturing activity introduced in 2015," it said. The group has also highlighted the adverse health effects of shale gas when processed, transported and used for energy, as well as the negative impacts of fossil fuels that come with liquified natural gas on climate change and human health.
"New Brunswick's health-care system is already under considerable strain," it said."As medical and health-care professionals working in this province, we call upon your government to protect the health and well-being of New Brunswickers by legislating a ban on fracking."It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
