Ex-New York Police Department official, Isa Abassi, was officially installed Tuesday as officer in charge of Paterson's police.

Abbassi inherits an understaffed department with a morale problem as the rank-and-file on the streets of Paterson face suspicion and hostility in high-crime neighborhoods. “There’s not going to be a ‘mission accomplished’ banner in six weeks or six months,” Platkin said, declining to predict how long his office would remain in charge of the department.
“Policing can no longer be viewed as a monopoly, where you take the services we provide with no alternative option,” Abbassi said. “We are a service provider and we must provide that service in a way our customer expects.”
