Aversion conditioning, it\u0027s hoped, teaches coyotes in Stanley Park that humans aren\u0027t friends.

Dana McDonald said she hopes it will lead to humans and coyotes coexisting in the park, following a spate of bites over 10 months recently and a huge cull by provincial officials last fall in response.September of last year was the last time a bite was recorded in the park, and also was when provincial officials culled the final four of 11 coyotes killed and removed.

“If they encounter a coyote, they take predetermined steps and through those steps, monitor what the coyote does,” McDonald said. “The observations they take out of those interactions are really important for informing our next steps.” “After they shook the shaker, the coyote left. That’s really positive. In all five instances, the coyote moved away with very little effort, so the coyotes are wary of humans.”

“In almost all cases that should make the coyote move away. If a coyote comes towards you, then you just back away slowly and leave the area.” There’s no exact number known of how many coyotes call Stanley Park home, but a good guess might be four.
