After more than three years of wandering around North Florida on her own, an African tortoise was found and reunited with her family.It's all thanks to a sheriff's office and an exotic animal refuge in Florida — and the power of social media.In a Facebook post, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said deputies brought the tortoise to an animal refuge over the weekend after finding her trying to cross a state highway.
The sheriff's office didn't release the owner's identity in the post.It turns out that the tortoise, whose name wasn't released by the sheriff's office, was found just 5 miles from her home. In the Facebook post announcing the tortoise's owner had been found, the sheriff's office said 'This really was an escape artist.'In its own Facebook post, Florida's Wildest Animal Rescue said the tortoise should be OK now that she's at home.
