Four boxes placed in city green spaces as part of a new P.E.I. initiative
A secure needle disposal box in Summerside’s Heather Moyse Park. - Colin MacLean/SaltWireSUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — It’s been months since Summerside had its first public needle disposal boxes installed and deputy CAO JP Desrosiers said the city is pleased with how they are working out.
Currently, there are four boxes in Summerside. After discussions with the Summerside police, it was decided that the boxes would go in the eastern and western portions of the boardwalk, Heather Moyse Park and Rotary Park. Disposal boxes are important to ensure that sharps are discarded in a safe manner and are later incinerated. That’s why, she said, it’s beneficial to have them located in places where needles have historically been found.
As well, it’s beneficial to have safe and clean consumption equipment available for anyone who uses drugs.Sheidow also added that if anyone finds a sharp in the ground and feels unsafe discarding it themselves they can contact PEERS Alliance.
