Celebrating Wild Caraway: Taste of Nova Scotia's Restaurant of the Year | SaltWireSUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Summerside Community Fridge has been open for a year and volunteers say the need is greater than ever.

Shareene Graham said that it's great to see the community still supporting the Summerside Community Fridge a year into the initiative. – Kristin Gardiner/SaltWire Clow saw there was a need and wanted to do her part to help out in Summerside. The point would be for anyone to drop off goods for the fridge or pantry, for anyone in need to anonymously take.

One supporter was Duane MacDonald, owner of Callbecks’s Home Hardware – who donated the fridges as well as some supplies. The business was approached early on in the fridge’s inception, and MacDonald was happy to assist. “Unfortunately, that funding has dried up, so, now we can’t grocery shop every day like we used to.… We really need the community to pitch in, clean out their pantries, clean out their freezers and contribute what they can to help out.”

Another challenge came with the fire in mid-February, which shut down the fridge for nearly two months After, the fridge was only opened for limited hours, between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.
