Despite 26-0 loss to Vikings, College Heights Cougars will host playoff against South Kamloops next Saturday at Masich Place Stadium
The College Heights Cougars had a good week of practice and came to the high school football field at Masich Place Stadium Friday night thinking they had an answer for the Nechako Valley Vikings, who came in as the favourites to win the P.G. Bowl. They couldn’t run the ball, they couldn’t complete passes and they couldn’t stop the Vikings from seizing a 26-0 victory to claim the Matt Pearce Memorial Trophy, ending their 12-year drought as champions of the B.C.
As good as those four were dishing out offence, they were monsters on the other side of the ball, combining with their teammates to hold College Heights without a single first down in the entire first half. “Cole Malo and Ben Wall did pretty much everything on defence,” said Ziler. “Cole was always getting in the backfield and Ben wasn’t letting them get past the line of scrimmage. We had so much pressure on our O-line and we had the run and those two are brothers and you can’t stop them.”
The Cougars aren’t done yet. They will host South Kamloops next Saturday in a playoff game at Masich. That’s their consolation to make up for the bitter sense of disappointment as they walked off the field after being handed their worst loss of the season. It was a reminder to Cougars Grade 12 running back/linebacker Ryder Stoughton that his high school football career is rapidly coming to an end.
