The Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased 11 hectares of wetland habitat – an area that is an essential habitat for the Eastern Mountain Avens. - ContributedDIGBY, N.S. — The Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased 11 hectares of key wetland habitat on Nova Scotia’s most westerly point, Brier Island.

The intact bog plays a key role in the upkeep of the natural hydrological function of the reserve’s ecosystem. “Brier Island is such a special place in Nova Scotia and expanding the existing protected area is a win for the endangered Eastern Mountain Aven populations,” said NCC N.S. program director Jaimee Dupont Morozoff.

The overall nature reserve is composed of forest, beach shoreline and wetlands, including several peat bogs. NCC’s stewardship team and the local community conduct beach cleanups here, including clearing shorelines of washed-up and marine debris harmful to the migrating birds that are dependent on the stopover location.
