Along with giving the sports the chance to reach championship status, it could mean additional scholarship opportunities.
ByIn coming years, female athletes may have two new sports to compete in at the NCAA championship level, providing possible additional scholarship opportunities.
Created in 1994, the program was established after a survey found female students only had about 30 percent of athletic participation opportunities offered by NCAA institutions. The NCAA logo is seen in the second half of the game between the Northwestern Wildcats and the Vanderbilt Commodores during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Vivint Smart Home Arena on March 16, 2017, in Salt Lake City. On Tuesday, NCAA announced it was recommending colleges add women's wrestling and acrobatics and tumbling to the Emerging Sports for Women program.
Ahead of NCAA's announcement, Wrestle Like a Girl, an organization dedicated to empowering women in wrestling, created an online petition urging wrestling to be added to the Emerging Sports for Women program. As of Tuesday morning, it had 27,556 signatures out of its goal of 35,000.
