CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Only a week into the 2024 New Brunswick Senior Baseball League regular season and there has been no lack of excitement during Charlottetown Auto Body Islanders’ home games at Memorial Field.

Two innings later, Scott Harper delivered the game-winning hit – a sharp single that carried well to left field – to score Tyson McInnis and give the Islanders the walk-off win. The results leave the Islanders in a first-place tie with the Fredericton Royals in the five-team league. The Islanders and Royals are 2-1 while the Ironmen are tied for fourth with the Moncton Mets .

Smith granted two runs in four innings while allowing five hits, no walks and striking out one. The Islanders’ defence supported Smith by turning two important double-plays – one in the sixth inning to get out of a bases-loaded jam and another in the eighth inning after a one-out single. Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders pitcher Ethan Smith, 8, throws the ball to first base to retire the Chatham Ironmen’s Jamie Walls, 19, after a sacrifice bunt in the top of the seventh inning. Islanders second baseman Tyson McInnis covers first base while catcher Cole MacLaren, 5, follows the play. The Islanders won the entertaining opening game of a New Brunswick Senior Baseball League doubleheader at Memorial Field in Charlottetown 6-5 in nine innings.
