NBC's TV lineup for next season looks remarkably stable—but it's still looking for a hit comedy

Factor in returning freshman dramas “Manifest” and “New Amsterdam”—not to mention “Law & Order: SVU,” which at 21 seasons will take the crown as the longest-running scripted drama in the history of television—and this now represents 14 of the 22 hours. With “Dateline” a sure returnee on Friday , NBC has the tools to present the most stable schedule. Flash back just a few seasons, and no one would have ever thought that would be possible.
Also, when a network crows about the DVR usage of certain series, don’t forget that the lower the traditional ratings, the greater the percentage of DVR usage . Don’t be fooled: NBC’s comedy lineup this season was a bust—again.Obviously, NBC is in need of a mass-appeal hit sitcom to lead off Thursday, which is certainly no easy feat. But with “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS about to wrap , there could be an opportunity.
