According to a source, EA nearly had Zion Williamson for its NBA Live 20 cover athlete, but things fell through.

Williamson signed an agreement with Prime Sports shortly after declaring for the NBA Draft, but the agreement was allegedly missing state-required verbiage. Based on this, Williamson is seeking to be released from the agreement and his attachment to Prime Sports.

What isn't speculation is the impact Williamson could have made for the NBA Live brand if he were tabbed as the cover athlete. For years, Live has failed to keep pace with its rival NBA 2K in almost every category. The sales for the two games annually haven't been comparable and each year there are whispers and questions as to whether Live will continue to fight for its piece of the virtual hoops scene.

While his involvement would have no bearing on the actual quality of this year's version of NBA Live, his affiliation would have shone a brighter light on the series than its had in over a decade. If Williamson is indeed out as the cover athlete for NBA Live 20, the immediate thought is who they might turn to as the prime representative.

The problem is, EA also has to consider what 2K is doing and has done when it comes to cover athletes. EA probably wouldn't want to use a player who has been a cover athlete for NBA 2K within the past three or four years. Also, it probably wouldn't want to use a player who has been featured prominently in 2K advertising spots in recent history.
