There's a shortage of COVID-19 tests, and people who have symptoms and need to be tested, can’t. Meanwhile NBA players who are asymptomatic are getting tested. How could it be?

Obtaining a test kit from a private laboratory can cost $100 to $350 and sometimes more with additional costs. And the test kits are not widely available from those private labs.

The Thunder obtained their tests through a private facility, but a few days earlier while in Oklahoma City, 58 people connected to the Jazz were tested using publicly available kits following. The Oklahoma State Department of Health called it a public health decision, and at the time that left the state with 250 kits.

Officials with four teams said they believe they will have the ability to be tested at private facilities if necessary, those officials with knowledge of the plans told USA TODAY Sports. They were granted anonymity so they could speak freely about the process. “We’ve been told that testing’s in short supply," Myers said."We’re treating ourselves like people, which is what we are. We’re not better than anybody. We’re not worse. We’re just a basketball team, like any company."

The Florida Department of Health said for a person to be tested the individual must have close contact with a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 and have a fever, cough and/or shortness of breath. If someone is not showing symptoms, despite travel or exposure, DOH says they will not be tested.
