The Royal Canadian Navy is notifying residents of upcoming demolition training on an island south of Metchosin starting later this week.
From Nov. 28 to Dec. 6, the navy will be conducting land-based demolition training on Bentinck Island, just off Rocky Point in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The training will take place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, and the Navy says residents are unlikely to notice the training “except on days when atmospheric conditions affect how far sound may travel.” The Navy notes that the demolition training is monitored by a third-party marine mammal observer to make sure no whales are impacted by the sound of the explosives.
If whales are seen in the area the marine mammal observer will pause the training and it will only resume once the animals have left the area and the observer gives the Navy the all clear. “Training events are critical to ensure military members gain core skills and maintain operational readiness,” said Maritime Forces Pacific Public Affairs in a notice on Nov. 21.Adam Chan is a Digital News Editor who joined CHEK News in 2023.
