Three suicides by sailors assigned to a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier were not connected, but the poor quality of life onboard was a “contributing factor” in one of the deaths.

FILE - The nuclear aircraft carrier USS George Washington pier side at Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Va., Sept. 30, 2016. Three suicides by sailors assigned to the USS George Washington aircraft carrier were not connected, but the poor quality of life onboard was a contributing factor in one of the deaths. Those are the conclusions of a new Navy report released Monday, Dec. 19, 2022.

“Based on my review, I conclude these three suicides were independent events and that there was no direct correlation between these three deaths,” said Adm. Daryl Caudle, commander of the Navy’s Fleet Forces Command.Editor’s note: This story includes discussion of suicide. “The loss of these three Sailors and the impact their deaths had on their shipmates, family and friends is nothing that can ever be measured,” said Caudle. “We can, however, investigate why they did what they did, learn from it, and use that information to prevent it from happening again. We owe that to every Sailor to keep them physically and mentally safe.”
