Genetically modified Atlantic salmon are been grown for retail sale by American company AquaBounty at a Rollo Bay fish farm on the northeastern side of Prince Edward Island. - ContributedIt’s taken 23 years for Canadian Parliamentarians to consider amendments to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act but an adviser for Nature Canada says the changes may not go nearly far enough on the issue of genetically engineered organisms.

“We don’t just want to do a repeat of that with GMOs and in 25 years from now have all these genetically modified organisms out in the environment and interacting and reproducing with the wild species.” The Atlantic Salmon Federation and the Assembly of First Nations have already made submissions to the committee, calling for the protection of wild salmon from genetically engineered salmon because of a negative impact on First Nations’ inherent treaty rights, and based on scientific grounds and decades of experience with conservation.

“Presumably, they are still producing the fish and slaughtering it and sending it out in styrofoam boxes to restaurants and stores but we have yet to find out where it’s being sold, other than presumably it’s been sold in Canada and consumed by Canadians without their knowledge” Butler said.
