National Guard heading to Florida prisons to help understaffed Department of Corrections

The current vacancy rate in the Corrections Department is nearly 25%, and the department had 4,000 openings, its CFO told a state commission.

Driskell said she and other Democrats worried about having National Guard members at prisons when they may be needed during a hurricane emergency.

Driskell also warned that National Guard members may not have the same training as the correctional officers.
