Nate Oats is “proud of the week” Brandon Miller had, but no, Oats doesn’t think his star freshman was snubbed on Monday.
The SEC’s freshmen accolade went to Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr., who scored 50 points, 24 against Alabama on Saturday. The overall player award went to Kentucky’s Oscar Tshiewbe, who shot 87% from the floor in the Wildcats’ two contests.
Oats referenced the high-level play across the SEC as a potential reason why Miller wasn’t selected, citing its two close wins compared to Kentucky’s resume-boosting victories at Florida and Auburn. But Oats didn’t know if the scandal following Miller — Tuscaloosa investigators revealed Millerand would-be murder weapon to former teammate Darius Miles on Jan. 15 — could impact any potential postseason accolades.
“That’s a really good question. Obviously, he had a great week. We’re proud of the week he had. He was able to focus a lot. The two guys that got the awards, Oscar had a great week too. ... Our team hasn’t played as well maybe as we needed to. Nick Smith’s coming off injury and played well. Look, here’s the deal, in our league in the SEC, they got to make tough decisions every week. There was great, great players who won the award.
