This satellite image from May 13, shows the green algal bloom already starting to grow in the far western side of Lake Erie . This year's prediction is for a moderate to moderate high level of algae.|CLEVELAND, Ohio -Every spring and summer the amount of algae that grows in Lake Erie has to be monitored as it can choke out wildlife and effect drinking water.

While mainly a problem for the westside of Lake Erie because it’s much more shallow, if the algal bloom grows large enough it can be a problem for all of the North Coast. The main culprit for the bloom is fertilizer used in fields in Ohio and Indiana that gets washed away by rain, ends up in the Maumee River which runs into Lake Erie.According to this year’s forecast by the Harmful Algal Bloom for Lake Erie is expected to be moderate to larger than moderate.

If the bloom gets to the high side of the forecast it would send conditions to the fifth highest since 2002.
