'I’m so sorry to Matt DiBenedetto, Mike Wheeler. I hate it. I know what a win would mean to that team,' Denny Hamlin said as soon as he exited his car. 'But I’ve got to give 110 percent.'

Michelle MartinelliNASCAR driver Matt DiBenedetto almost had a storybook ending to a “devastating” week. The driver of the No. 95 Toyota led a race-high 93 laps at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, and it looked like he was headed for his first career Cup Series win.

With about 11 laps to go, Hamlin took the lead and won his fourth race of the season, while DiBenedetto finished second. This is DiBenedetto’s first — and turns out only — year with Leavine Family Racing, and Wheeler is new to the team as well in 2019 after being Hamlin’s crew chief for three seasons.

"Seeing local kids get the chance to dodge their favorite stock cars while helping to clean the track of excess rubber may seem as much a part of NASCAR as the checkered flag, but unfortunately its time has passed," the statement reads. "We believe the risks now outweigh the rewards for those 10-year-olds who feel the rush of air produced by a stock car flying right by them at 175 mph as they scrub the fabled track surface of Daytona or Talladega." In an accompanying press release, NASCAR confirmed it would erect a plaque near the third turn of the Daytona International Speedway to memorialize the 24 boys and girls killed by a spinning Kevin Harvick last year.
