Nasa 3D-printed the 1,700-square-foot facility, dubbed Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog — or CHAPEA.From left to right, Anca Selariu, Nathan Jones, Kelly Haston, and Ross Brockwell, held up the mission’s flag moments before entering the habitat until July 2024.The habitat — named Mars Dune Alpha — will feature a kitchen, private crew quarters, and two bathrooms, with medical, work, and recreation areas.
CHAPEA’s Mars Dune Alpha is a 3D-printed habitat designed to serve as an analog for one-year missions.Exercise equipment inside CHAPEA’s Mars Dune Alpha that will be used by the crew during their stay.The only limitation the habitat can not simulate is Mars’ gravity, which is about 38% of Earth’s surface gravity.
Haston, who will act as the commander of the mission, expressed her admiration for being part of the groundbreaking study, saying it “exemplifies some of the best qualities of humankind.”The crew members wave goodbye to the crowd moments before being locked in the habitat until July 2024.Though none of the crew members are trained astronauts, Haston said her crew is an “amazing group of dedicated individuals who feel very passionate about space exploration and science.
