There are plenty of active volcanoes in the Kuril Islands, including Raikoke. But unlike Raikoke, most of them erupt fairly frequently; our volcano of the moment has only been observed erupting a handful of times in recorded history – 1765, 1778, and 1924 – partly because it appears to be less effusive than its neighbours, but also partly as it’s so remote that, prior to the advent of modern volcanology and satellite technology, some of its eruptions may not have been spotted.

That made its summer 2019 eruption, its first in 95 years of relative slumber, quite the showstopper. It was short-lived, though: after the major blasts from the 21of June produced that huge plume of ash, a series of more minor explosions followed in the days and weeks to come, with all things far quieter again by the start of August.
