NASA''s mission plans to investigate sunlight's effect on the ionosphere through instruments on the rockets that measure electric/magnetic fields, density, and temperature changes.
Three rockets will travel from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico to where the Moon directly aligns with the Sun during the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023.Get a daily digest of the latest news in tech, science, and technology, delivered right to your mailbox. Subscribe now.
The mission aims to study how the sudden drop in sunlight affects the upper atmosphere, specifically focusing on the ionosphere. The rockets will carry scientific instruments to measure changes in electric and magnetic fields, density, and temperature in the ionosphere. NASA explained how a solar eclipse causes the sunlight to disappear and then reappear over a small area very quickly. This rapid change causes the ionospheric temperature and density to drop and then rise again, creating waves that travel through the ionosphere.
The mission will also conduct ground-based observations and measurements from different locations, including Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and MIT's Haystack Observatory in Westford, Massachusetts. The rockets will travel slightly beyond the annular eclipse's central path, where the Moon aligns directly in front of the Sun.
