So far, about 40 to 50 people have volunteered for the count of the city’s unhoused population, and another 20 to 30 are needed

Volunteers are needed for an April 26-27 homeless count in Nanaimo that’s expected to find a significant increase in the number of unhoused since 2020, when the last “point in time” survey took place.

This year’s survey is covering a larger territory than in the past. Historically, the vulnerable population was concentrated downtown, but now people live from the south end to the north end of the city, Thornton said. Some in Nanaimo have speculated there are now up to 800 people without homes in the city, the second-largest municipality on Vancouver Island, with a population that now tops 100,000.Volunteers are needed for a “magnet” event to attract survey participants, set for St. Paul’s Anglican Church at 100 Chapel St. on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thornton said.

The point-in-time surveys in the field will mainly run 24 hours starting on the evening of April 26. On the first night, the focus will be on shelters and emergency housing, Thornton said.
