A 12‑year‑old boy knocked on a Nanaimo woman's door at 3 a.m. pleading for help for his father who was having a heart attack. The woman answered, ran with the boy to his house, performed CPR for ten to fifteen minutes under 911 guidance, and revived the man before paramedics arrived. The incident highlights the importance of first‑aid training.
A Nanaimo woman's quick reaction to her doorbell, and rush to help a stranger, are being credited with saving a man's life.
“He was so brave to go door to door to get help for his Dad. He saved his Dad,” says Pye, a Nanaimo mom and graphic designer. Pye says she was asleep at 3 a.m. Saturday when her doorbell went off. She woke up and looked at her front step camera, where she found a frightened young boy standing, pleading for her to answer, and saying that his Dad needed help.
At just 12 years-old, the boy had already tried knocking at three other homes’ doors, when he reached Pye’s, and she ran with him to the boy’s house. The former Navy reservist called 911, where an operator walked her through CPR and chest compressions until an ambulance could arrive. Pye says she did compressions for 10 to 15 minutes and was able to revive the boy’s Dad before paramedics appeared beside her.
“Kept going, kept going, paramedics ran in. One of them knelt down with me, and said ‘I’m taking over,” says Pye.
“It’s exhausting work and often times people can maybe manage two minutes and she went for 10. So not only did she do something with incredible integrity, but she used all of her energy. Ten minutes is a long time,” says Tina Hein, a first-aid trainer and owner of Nanaimo’s ABCB First Aid Training.
“Sometimes an ambulance can’t get there in time. So that woman completely saved that man’s life. I’m so proud of her,” says Hein. BC Ambulance confirms that the patient was rushed to hospital in stable condition.
Pye has learned from the man’s family that he suffered a heart attack, but is now recovering in hospital. Pye notes the incident is prompting her to encourage others to learn first aid as she prepares to take a first-aid course later this month.
