A Nanaimo man has been charged with arson in connection with the Aug. 2 fire that caused significant damage to a Tim Hortons restaurant.

The 37-year-old man was arrested a day after the fire and is being held in custody until a Aug. 16 court appearance. He is also suspected of causing two dumpster fires in the immediate area of the Tim Hortons at Northfield Road and Nanaimo Parkway. No charges have been laid in connection with the dumpster fires as those investigations continue, said police.

Mounties said the Tim Hortons fire caused “hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage” to the new building and put dozens of people out of work. Repairs to the damages are expected to take up to six months.
