James Bennet, the controversial editor of the New York Times’ editorial page, has resigned after a staff revolt over a column by Sen. Tom Cotton calling for the military to quell nationwide protests.

In a statement Sunday, the New York Times Co. NYT, +2.39% said Bennet has resigned, effective immediately, and deputy editorial page editor Jim Dao will be reassigned to the newsroom. Katie Kingsbury has been named acting editorial page editor through the November election.

On Wednesday, an op-ed column by Cotton, the Republican senator from Arkansas, was published by the Times, calling for “an overwhelming show of force to disperse, detain and ultimately deter lawbreakers” and stop an “orgy of violence.” The message was in line with President Donald Trump’s aggressive rhetoric earlier in the week about using U.S.

On Thursday, the Times admitted “that a rushed editorial process led to the publication of an Op-Ed that did not meet our standards.”In a statement Sunday, Bennet said: “The journalism of Times Opinion has never mattered more than in this time of crisis at home and around the world, and I’ve been honored to be part of it.
