A Nova Scotia man speaks out after being denied entry into a community centre with his service dog, who is trained to assist him medically.
WATCH: A Truro, N.S., man is speaking out after his service dog was denied entry at his local community centre. He says grey areas in the legislation around service dog s means venues are left to make their own decision on what documentation they accept. Ella MacDonald reports.
“We showed up with tickets in hand, all in his gear. And a security guard approached me, saying I needed ID. I was like, ‘I’ve never heard of that. I was led to believe I had done everything by the book,'” Cox recounted. Following what Cox calls a “discriminatory” encounter, he returned home. The province responded that the decision to deny entry based on a lack of service dog ID is at the discretion of each venue. It also said identification issued by the province is available on a voluntary basis but is not required.
