ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The provincial government is currently in Seoul, South Korea recruiting early childhood educators , according to the YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador’s career opportunities webpage. It says anyone interested in meeting to discuss certification or immigration can email, the same email address used by the Department of Immigration, Population Growth and Skills in its international virtual job fairs.

The provincial government is helping Newfoundland and Labrador employers recruit internationally with virtual job fairs throughout the fall and winter targeted at Asia, Oceania, Africa, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. The fairs are focused on in-demand sectors with vacancies that are difficult to fill locally, including health care, early childhood education, technology and hospitality, according to a provincial government news release in August.

Listed on the YMCA’s website are some of the perks of working for the organization as an ECE, including possible relocation support for ECEs and their families; settlement support upon arrival; competitive wages; paid holidays; a pension; and health insurance. In September, SaltWire confirmed the province is recruiting ECEs in southeast Asia, but both the Department of Education and Minister Krista Lynn Howell have since been mum on details about the recruitment effort.

Some early learning advocacy organizations have criticized the province’s international recruitment effort, calling it a Band-Aid solution that does not address retention in the sector.
