ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services has announced plans to reduce the number of private health-care staff — agency travel nurses — by more than 80 per cent over the next two years.
Efforts since February have already resulted in an 11.4 per cent reduction. That figure should hit 30 per cent by December.Same job, different pay: N.L. nurses criticize pay inequities, but this time it has nothing to do with private agency nurses“By gradually phasing out the use of private health-care staff to traditional levels, we will ensure we are able to continue to offer our current level of service as we bring on more services,” stated CEO David Diamond.
The health authority is developing a “grow your own” strategy to foster career development among current employees along with initiatives to increase retention.
