Stan Rogers Folk Festival 2024: 27 years of music and community | SaltWire #festival #music #nsST. JOHN'S, N.L. — “We're fighting for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” Attorney General John Hogan told reporters gathered at the Confederation Building in St. John’s Thursday afternoon.

She said the province has lobbied the federal government about this on numerous occasions, but the concerns have been dismissed. Hogan said going to court is always the last option, but when the federal government extended the equalization formula until 2029 and did not take the province’s position into account, the provincial government realized that the last option — the court option — was, in fact, the only option.

• Total resource revenue is included in the calculation used to determine the fiscal capacity cap on equalization payments. The cap has been referred to as the “resource fiscal capacity cap” since it only hinders provinces that have resource revenues. “The current equalization formula penalizes Newfoundland and Labrador for developing its natural resources, including renewables like wind energy,” the release said. It said this cap systematically disadvantages this province.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tony Wakeham said the Liberals have been “meekly kowtowing” to the Trudeau Liberals throughout their mandate, and “are now desperately stealing pages from PC Blue Books to launch an equalization fight in a frantic bid to distance themselves from Trudeau.”
