An NJ Advance Media investigation into boardwalk game shenanigans found over five years, the 63 citations have been issued to bad operators.

The man running the balloon dart game looked with some trepidation at the small army of blue polo shirts descending upon his stand.State authorities were out in force in Seaside Heights Thursday, scrutinizing price tags, checking out claw machines and measuring the pounds per square inch of basketballs on the boardwalk as part of the state Division of Consumer Affairs’ annual “Safe Summer” event.

The Jersey Shore is a major driver of New Jersey’s $45 billion tourism industry, meaning those dollars you pump into the arcade games or press into the palms of boardwalk operators really add up. Overall, officials said, operators are quick to correct problems when investigators identify them, though not all boardwalk operators are on the straight and narrow.

At the frog bog, where players use a mallet to launch a rubber frog onto colored lily pads, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer was the first official to successfully land a floppy amphibian. The attorney general had no such luck but faired better at the balloon darts. No New Jersey official was able to sink a shot, though inspectors found nothing amiss. They had no one to blame but themselves. It was onto the claw machine, the ubiquitous boxes at arcades along the boardwalk stuffed with plush toys, sports Jerseys and even expensive electronics.
