A bill signed last year allocated $1 million to establish New Jersey's Black Heritage Trail.
Secretary of State Tahesha Way highlighted other significant locations that may find a place along the trail including Princeton, where Renaissance man and activist Paul Robeson was born and Red Bank, where legendary jazz musician Count Basie learned to play grand piano.
The first of the Historical Commission’s community sessions was held earlier this month at the Newark Museum of Art and attended by several leaders and members of the public. Also, the state agency already received about 200 responses to its survey as of Thursday, according to officials. Other state agencies including the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism, Historic Preservation Office and New Jersey Black Cultural and Heritage Initiative will all have a hand in putting the trail together alongside the Historical Commission, according to officials.
Before the inception of the trail, Williams played a pivotal role in highlighting the importance of the former Plane Street Colored Church, now known as Frederick Douglass Field on University Avenue in Newark. The site was next door to an Underground Railroad “station” owned by a Black man named Jacob King. Last April the National Park Service approved her application to have the site recognized as a stop along the Underground Railroad.
